CHAPTER SEVEN

Nationals came and went, and our Juniors performed very well. “You guys are on track to make the Senior teams next season,” I told the kids. We brought in a large projection system into the gym and invited all of the students and their families to watch both the Olympic Trials and then the Olympics at the gym. We usually had trouble keeping the kids focused, but once they saw their heroes on television being first named to the Olympic team and then going on to the actual Games, they sat in awe, taking in every move. Dreaming, as I had myself done, of following in their footsteps.

The period immediately following an Olympic Games was always hectic at the gym as I fielded calls from parents who wanted to enroll their kids in our program. We were already at capacity, and I created a waiting list. This was normal but nonetheless exhausting as some moms just could not understand why I would not train their child. “My daughter is a prodigy,” I heard more times than I could count. “You have to admit her!”

Fortunately, the hype died down after a few months, and soon we were back on track for the upcoming season. We were heading into December when Jacob and I headed to Dallas for a sports convention to check out the newest equipment to hit the market, as well as therapy products and even leotards. I said goodbye to Marcus on Thursday afternoon before we had left; he had planned to go to Colorado that weekend to visit his parents. “No point in my staying in town if you’re gone,” he had whispered in my ear before kissing me goodbye.

“Well, give your parents my best wishes.” I had yet to meet Marcus’ parents in person, but I had chatted with them a few times over video calls with Marcus. “I’ll see you on Monday morning?”

“Count on it. I love you.”

“I love you, too, Elizabeth.” And with one last kiss, I turned and headed out.

Jacob and I arrived back home late on Sunday night, but even though I had only gotten a few hours of sleep, I was the first person at the gym Monday morning, unlocking the doors and turning on the lights before heading to my office. “Huh?” I muttered when I noticed that my door was slightly ajar. I always locked it when I left and was sure I had done so Saturday afternoon when I’d headed home.

The piece of paper lying on my desk was the first thing I saw. I kept my desk immaculately clean, so much so that everyone teased me about it, joking that they wondered if I actually did any work. I could not stand clutter, and I immediately put things away when I was done with them. So, the fact that a sheet of paper was on top of my otherwise clean desk immediately caught my eye.

Figuring it was perhaps something from the cleaning crew, I went about putting my jacket and purse away before even walking over to pick it up.
